Park Shin-hye once again flipped the board in Undercover Miss Hong, delivering a chilling turnaround set against the chaos of the IMF financial crisis.
Episode 8, which aired on February 8, unfolded amid the massive upheaval of Korea’s 1997 foreign exchange crisis, as internal fractures within Hanmin Securities came sharply into focus. The episode recorded an average nationwide paid-platform rating of 9.4 percent, peaking at 10.2 percent, ranking first in its time slot. It also marked the drama’s third consecutive personal best, while topping all channels among the key 20–49 demographic.
Hong Geum-bo (Park Shin-hye) uncovered the identity of the internal whistleblower through a carefully calculated trap. By intentionally disabling specific keys on a keyboard labeled “So.Bang.Cha” and comparing the missing letters in an email, she deduced that Bang Jin-mok (Kim Do-hyun) was behind the leak. Bang revealed that he had once planned to expose corruption alongside CEO Kang Myung-hwi (Choi Won-young), but the plan collapsed following Kang’s death. He then drew a firm line, stating that he would no longer help and insisting that he did not possess a copy of the slush fund ledger.
Tensions escalated further as Go Bok-hee (Ha Yoon-kyung) began to sense Hong’s true identity. After visiting her family home to confirm the truth, Bok-hee debated whether to inform Song Joo-ran (Park Mi-hyun). Realizing that Hong had endured everything alone for the sake of her family, she ultimately chose silence. The shift from rivalry to solidarity added emotional weight to the episode.
Shin Jung-woo (Go Kyung-pyo) also emerged as a key variable. Concerned for Hong’s safety, he urged Director Yoon Jae-beom (Kim Won-hae) to reinstate her, but Yoon dismissed the request, remarking that Hong was not someone focused on survival but on winning. Diverging perspectives surrounding her further deepened the tension between characters.
The latter half of the episode plunged fully into the IMF crisis. As accounting data became mandatory to secure public funds, Chairman Kang Pil-beom (Lee Deok-hwa) ordered accounting fraud, pushing the task force into covert operations underground. Sensing this, Hong infiltrated the task force office as an assistant and made a daring move, replacing the executives’ falsified report with her own truthful version.
The situation remained precarious until the final moment, when Shin Jung-woo chose Hong’s report, delivering a dramatic reversal. The revelation that he had foreseen the IMF crisis before rising to the presidency only amplified questions surrounding his true intentions.
Hanmin Securities ultimately failed to secure public funding. The fallout rippled through devastated clients, collapsed employees, and Hong’s family, who bore the full weight of the damage. Misled by Shin’s words, Bang Jin-mok turned his back on Hong, declaring that they would never be on the same side again. Their shattered trust now stands as a central fault line moving forward.
With its meticulous depiction of late-1990s Yeouido and the human cost of financial catastrophe, Undercover Miss Hong continues to balance emotional resonance with mounting suspense. Episode 9 airs February 14 at 9:10 p.m.
