The King’s Warden has dominated the Korean box office, surpassing 1 million admissions just five days after its release.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system on February 9, The King’s Warden drew 308,089 viewers on February 8 alone, maintaining its position at No. 1. Total admissions reached 1,001,110. Over the three-day weekend from February 6 to 8, the film attracted a remarkable 761,840 moviegoers.
Notably, the film outperformed the opening-weekend record of Yadang, the 2025 Korean box office No. 2 hit starring Yoo Hae-jin, which previously drew 610,183 viewers in its first weekend.
Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, The King’s Warden tells the story of a village chief who voluntarily enters exile to revive his community and a young former king banished from the throne. Directed by Jang Hang-jun, the film is the first Korean production to explore a hidden chapter in the story of King Danjong. The ensemble cast includes Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do, and Kim Min.
Ranking second is Choir of God, which drew 50,028 viewers on the day, bringing its cumulative total to 1,115,903. The film portrays events surrounding the creation of a fake propaganda choir established to earn foreign currency for North Korea.
Once We Were Us placed third, adding 30,125 admissions for a cumulative total of 2,484,417. The romance follows Eun-ho (Koo Kyo-hwan) and Jung-won (Moon Ga-young), former lovers who reunite by chance after ten years and revisit lingering memories of their past.
Fourth place went to THE DAY, DECEMBER 3, 2024: Fabricated Insurrection, Hidden Truth, which added 28,597 viewers to reach a total of 120,488 admissions. The documentary was produced by Jeon Han-gil and directed by Lee Young-don.
Rounding out the top five is Mercy, which drew 11,996 viewers for a cumulative total of 60,849. The time-limit thriller centers on a detective played by Chris Pratt who must prove his innocence within 90 minutes while confronting an AI-driven judicial system known as “MERCY” that determines guilt solely through data.
