A new generation of theatre artists is stepping into the spotlight as actors from the 12th class of Double K Entertainment’s Theatre School Cultural Sharing Project prepare to appear in The Wife, a production under the Kim Soo-ro Curated 21 banner. The cast’s debut has sparked anticipation as fresh faces poised to shape the future of Korean theatre.
Written in 2019 by British playwright Samuel Adamson, The Wife garnered widespread critical acclaim during its Korean premiere, earning top honors including the Baeksang Arts Awards and the Dong-A Theatre Awards. The play was praised for its artistic ambition and thematic depth.
Drawing inspiration from Henrik Ibsen’s classic A Doll’s House, the story moves beyond its original ending to explore women’s lives across different eras, spanning from 1959 to 2049. Through the loves and choices of women living in distinct time periods, the play examines how social conventions, marriage, love, LGBTQ+ issues, and women’s rights have evolved over time. At its core is a persistent question: what it means to live as an individual before being defined as someone’s wife or family member.
The production is directed by Shin Yoo-chung, a Dong-A Theatre Award-winning director known for works such as The Turing Machine, The Crucible, Scorched, and Angels in America. His direction emphasizes a bold spatial design that dissolves the boundary between stage and audience, inviting viewers into a more immersive theatrical experience.
Powered by the fresh energy of emerging actors, The Wife is expected to deliver a resonant emotional impact. The production runs from February 25 to March 3 at Hyundai Card UNDERSTAGE.
