The Korean film Choir of God has climbed to the top of the box office after an unlikely late surge, completing a dramatic comeback run.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing network on Feb. 2, Choir of God drew 65,766 moviegoers on Feb. 1 alone, ranking first for the day. Its cumulative admissions now stand at 934,398, placing the film within striking distance of the 1 million mark.
The film follows the creation of a fake propaganda troupe in North Korea, assembled to earn foreign currency, and the events that unfold around it. Actors Park Si-hoo and Jung Jin-woon lead the cast.
Despite facing heavyweight Hollywood blockbusters such as Avatar Fire and Ash and Zootopia 2, the film steadily built momentum. With fewer screens, it compensated by posting the highest seat occupancy rate, gradually expanding its audience. Released on the same day as Once We Were Us, the title continued a month-long reverse climb before finally claiming the No.1 spot.
Once We Were Us ranked second with 63,941 admissions for the day, bringing its total to 2,322,852. The romance follows Eun-ho and Jung-won, former lovers who reunite by chance after ten years and revisit the memories they once shared.
Avatar Fire and Ash placed third with 24,491 admissions, pushing its cumulative total to 6,679,898. The story centers on the Sully family confronting a new threat on Pandora after tragedy strikes their eldest son.
Fourth place went to the animated fantasy adventure Shinbi Apartment 10th Anniversary Theatrical Edition One More Summon with 16,242 admissions, while Zootopia 2 rounded out the top five with 11,991, lifting its total to 8,568,225.
