The National Gugak Center will welcome the New Year of 2026 with “Saehui Gugakyeon,” a special performance that conveys hopes for harmony and renewal through traditional Korean music. The concert will take place on the 22nd at 7:30 p.m. at Yeakdang Hall of the National Gugak Center.
“Saehui Gugakyeon” is designed to share the spirit of the New Year through traditional music and dance. All four resident ensembles of the National Gugak Center will appear together on stage, presenting a collaborative performance that highlights unity and artistic exchange.
The program is directed by Kim Chung-han, artistic director of the National Gugak Center Dance Company. It will unfold a wide spectrum of stages, ranging from refined court music and court dances to dynamic performances that combine folk entertainment, dance, and traditional Korean orchestral music.
The opening piece, “Ilman Nyeon-ui Gisang” (Spirit of Ten Thousand Years), combines Hunryeongmu and Geommu to convey a powerful sense of renewal. This is followed by the court dance “Hyangamurak,” which brings together Abakmu, Hyangbalmu, and Mugo, adding a solemn and dignified atmosphere.
In the latter half of the performance, audiences will enjoy the court music ensemble piece “Boheoja,” the “Hojokpungnyu Concerto” highlighting the vigorous sound of the taepyeongso, and “Minyo Yeongok,” which weaves together folk songs from the Gyeonggi, Seodo, and Namdo regions.
The finale features “Pungjangmu,” a dance reinterpretation of the lively spirit of pangut, followed by a grand chorus of “Arirang” performed by master singer Lee Chun-hee and all participating performers, bringing the evening to a powerful close.
Tickets can be purchased through the official website of the National Gugak Center or by phone.
