IU and Byeon Woo-seok have taken the bold step of choosing marriage.
Ahead of its premiere in the first half of 2026, MBC’s new Friday–Saturday drama 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife unveiled a special teaser, opening the curtain on a fate-defining romance set to shake a constitutional monarchy version of South Korea in the 21st century.
21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife tells the story of Seong Hee-joo, a chaebol heiress who has everything yet remains dissatisfied because she is a commoner, and Grand Prince Ian, a king’s son who can have nothing because he cannot become king. IU plays Seong Hee-joo, while Byeon Woo-seok takes on the role of Grand Prince Ian, raising expectations for exceptional on-screen chemistry.
The two previously showcased their strong rapport as presenters at the 2025 MBC Drama Awards. Through this project, they are set to display full-fledged romantic chemistry, instantly heightening anticipation.
In the newly released special teaser, Seong Hee-joo emerges as the very embodiment of a “straightforward icon.” Though she possesses immense wealth and ability as the second daughter of a chaebol family, she repeatedly collides with barriers due to being a commoner and born out of wedlock. With a clear goal of rising in status, she advances toward Grand Prince Ian without hesitation.
By contrast, Grand Prince Ian exists as a threat simply by virtue of being the king’s son. Under the overt checks of Queen Dowager Yoon Yi-rang (played by Gong Seung-yeon), who seeks to protect the young king, he endures suffocating days marked by pressure to marry.
It is before this Grand Prince Ian that Seong Hee-joo appears, declaring, “Let’s get married.” Though Ian initially draws a line in response to the unexpected proposal, Seong Hee-joo shakes his ironclad resolve with a single line: “I missed you.” Her actions, stopping at nothing to achieve her goal, command attention.
The latter half of the teaser captures the two gradually growing closer, heightening the sense of anticipation. Amid the warm atmosphere, the moment Grand Prince Ian finally says, “Prepare to become the Grand Prince’s wife,” the beginning of a marriage that will turn South Korea upside down is declared.
21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife leaves a powerful impression by foretelling a romance that confronts taboos and the barriers of status head-on. Attention is focused on the birth of a perfect love forged by two imperfect individuals entangled in wealth, ability, and social rank.
