Opera 'The Marriage of Figaro' will be presented by the Chuncheon Cultural Foundation in collaboration with the Korea National Opera, inviting audiences into the heart of Count Almaviva's manor in the 18th century. The performances will take place at the Chuncheon Arts Center on the evening of December 19 and the afternoon of December 20.
The charm of this work goes beyond being a simple comedy. The confrontation between power and wit surrounding the right of prima noctis and the clever schemes devised by Figaro and Susanna feel unexpectedly fresh to contemporary audiences. Above all, the Act 2 moment that leads into “Sull’aria... che soave zeffiretto” recalls the very emotion heard in the movie The Shawshank Redemption. When the familiar melody fills the theater, anyone is naturally drawn into the story.
This stage gains even more vitality through the production team's creative interpretation. Director Vincent Huguet transforms the pace of a single day's events into a visual rhythm, while stage and costume designer Pierre Yovanovitch unfolds the “movement of time” through a revolving set and shifting light. Costumes lightly inspired by the 1920s and 1930s further enhance the work’s distinctive liveliness.
The cast also heightens anticipation. Baritone Lee Dong-hwan and soprano Hong Ju-young bring strong chemistry to the roles of Count Almaviva and the Countess. Soprano Lee Hye-jeong takes on the role of the maid Susanna, and bass Jo Chan-hee delivers a spirited portrayal of the witty Figaro. The New Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Korea National Opera’s Noi Opera Chorus complete the musical density through performance and chorus.
Park Jong-hoon, chairman of the Chuncheon Cultural Foundation, said, “It is meaningful to share the world-renowned masterpiece The Marriage of Figaro with citizens,” adding, “We will continue developing the Chuncheon Arts Center into a venue for profound performing arts.”
