In a bid to bolster support for his tariff policies, U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a public opinion campaign, emphasizing the economic benefits that tariffs have purportedly brought to the country. This move comes as the U.S. Supreme Court begins deliberations on the legality of the tariffs.

President Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his views, stating, "Companies are flocking to America solely because of tariffs. Has the U.S. Supreme Court not heard this? What on earth is going on?" He asserted the presidential authority to impose tariffs, questioning why this power should be restricted even for national security reasons.

The President highlighted the economic achievements under his tariff policies, claiming that the United States is now "the richest and most respected country in the world," with record-high stock market prices and 401k values. Trump also pointed out that the tariffs have led to significant investment in the U.S., with factories opening across the nation, and suggested that these benefits could facilitate a $2,000 dividend for every American, excluding the wealthy.

However, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clarified in an interview that the $2,000 dividend mentioned by President Trump could take the form of various tax cuts. These could include exemptions on tips, overtime pay, and social security pensions, as well as deductions on car loan interest, as outlined in the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' (OBBBA) passed earlier in the year.

This strategy is seen as a move to gain public favor while the Supreme Court evaluates the constitutional authority of the President to impose tariffs. Meanwhile, Trump has urged the Republican Party to end the ongoing government shutdown by eliminating the Senate filibuster, which requires a 60-vote majority to pass legislation, thus allowing the Republican majority to advance their agenda.
