The Woljeong Bridge in Gyeongju transformed into a grand floating stage. Beneath the ancient structure, once known as the gateway to Silla, water rippled as the garments of a thousand years came alive once again.
On October 29, the “APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) 2025 Korea Hanbok Fashion Show” was held, hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and the city of Gyeongju. Under the theme “Hanbok: Flying into Tomorrow,” the event presented a spectacular harmony of tradition, innovation, and advanced technology.
The show unfolded in three acts. The opening stage, “Hanbok, Awakened in Golden Light,” reimagined the royal attire of the Silla dynasty, drawing admiration from the audience.
Act II, “Hanbok, Blooming Today,” showcased special designs commemorating the APEC summit. Menswear crafted by Master Artisan Koo Hye-ja and womenswear by Master Artisan Kang Mi-ja were woven with Hangul and cloud patterns on Sangju Hamchang silk, beautifully capturing the refined elegance of Korean aesthetics.
The highlight came with Act III, “Hanbok, Flying Toward a New Tomorrow.” Designer Lee Jin-hee’s “AI Hanbok” reinterpreted the traditional curves of Hanbok using AI-based pattern generation technology. As the models walked, synchronized LED lights and media art moved in unison, creating the illusion that the garments were breathing. It was a moment where ancient heritage met the technology of the future.
Approximately 1,000 guests, including APEC delegates, business leaders, and citizens, attended the event. Among them were First Lady Kim Hye-kyung and the wife of the Canadian Prime Minister, both expressing admiration for the timeless charm of Hanbok.
Around the venue, exhibition booths highlighting the “Five Han” cultural elements such as Hanbok, Hansik (food), Hanok (architecture), Hanji (paper), and Hangeul (script) offered visitors an immersive experience into the layered beauty of Korean tradition.
