Interest in short-form dramas in the Korean market has surged an astounding 13-fold over the past year, according to Sam Bright, Vice President and General Manager of Google Play. This revelation underscores Google's strategic decision to launch an 'Entertainment-Focused' space in Korea, aiming to meet the burgeoning demand from users and support the expansion of Korean developers' content both domestically and globally.
In a meeting with Korean reporters at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, Bright highlighted the significant rise in interest in Korean short-form dramas. This new platform will consolidate a diverse array of content, including movies, TV shows, webtoons, and short-form dramas, akin to the 'Cricket Hub' in India and Japan's 'Manga Space.' The initiative, launched on September 23, positions Korea alongside the United States as the first regions to receive this specialized content space.
Bright emphasized the global popularity of apps developed by Korean creators, noting that of the 2 billion app downloads on Google Play last year, a staggering 1.51 billion occurred outside Korea. This statistic illustrates the extensive reach and influence of K-content on a global scale.
Google Play's partnership with major content providers such as Kakao, Naver, and Coupang Play further bolsters its offering, providing a rich tapestry of Korean dramas and webtoons to users worldwide. Bright also noted the substantial economic impact of Google Play's presence in Korea, with its ecosystem supporting over 440,000 jobs and showcasing the work of more than 110,000 Korean developers.
As the demand for Korean content continues to rise, Google Play plans to extend the reach of its Entertainment-Focused space globally, building on the successful expansion of Japan's 'Manga Space.' Bright expressed optimism about the potential role this new initiative will play in Korea's digital content landscape, hinting at further growth and influence of K-content on the world stage.
