A Port City with Modern History
The old town district of Gunsan, particularly around Yeonghwa-dong, is a hub of Korea’s modern history and cultural memory. Once a major port after its opening in 1899, the area retains colonial-era architecture, museums, and cultural landmarks that continue to attract visitors. The Modern History Street features the former Gunsan Customs House, the Bank of Joseon branch, and the Modern History Museum. Nearby, the Japanese-style Hirotsu House and Dongguksa Temple—Korea’s only remaining Japanese Buddhist temple—illustrate the city’s layered past. The district also gained recognition as the filming location for the 1998 film Christmas in August, which highlighted its cinematic atmosphere.
Culinary Traditions Rooted in Immigration
Gunsan is equally noted for its distinctive Chinese food culture. Chinese immigrants from Shandong settled in the city in the early 20th century and established restaurants that introduced new culinary styles. Over time, dishes such as spicy seafood jjambbong became localized favorites. Today, Gunsan maintains a “Jjambbong Street,” where long-standing establishments such as Binhaewon (founded in 1952 and designated as a registered cultural property) and Gukje Banjeom continue to operate, preserving both taste and tradition.
A Bakery That Stands the Test of Time
Another landmark in Gunsan’s old town is Lee Sung Dang, one of Korea’s oldest bakeries. Established in 1945, it remains widely known for its red bean and vegetable buns. Long queues outside the bakery reflect its enduring popularity among both residents and visitors. Its continued success underscores Gunsan’s reputation as a destination where food and history converge.
"Linking Past and Present"
With its preserved architecture, historic eateries, and cinematic connections, Gunsan’s old town provides a comprehensive view of the city’s past and present. The area demonstrates how history and everyday life remain intertwined in one of Korea’s representative port cities.
