Syntekabio Leads AI Datacenter Shift with Eco-Friendly Natural Convection

[Song Young-doo, Edaily Reporter] As AI technology becomes increasingly widespread, data centers have emerged as critical infrastructure across industries, sparking rising interest and demand for eco-friendly data centers. In South Korea, Syntekabio’s green data center has come under the spotlight.

Syntekabio announced that its ABS(AI Bio Supercom) Center received the Platinum certification for Green Data Centers earlier this year the highest rating under Korea’s national standards for promoting energy efficiency and environmentally responsible operation in data centers.

According to annual monitoring results for 2024, Syntekabio‘s data center recorded a Power Usage Effectiveness(PUE) of 1.13 and a Water Usage Effectiveness(WUE) of 0.46.

These figures place the center on par with leading global cloud providers, demonstrating that high-performance supercomputing infrastructure can operate efficiently while conserving energy and resources.

A PUE of 1.13 means about 88.5% of total electricity was used directly for IT equipment operations, with only 11.5% consumed by auxiliary systems such as cooling and lighting. This efficiency is 30~40% higher than the national average for data centers and is comparable to cutting-edge facilities operated by hyperscale companies like Google, Microsoft, and AWS.

The WUE of 0.46 means the center used only 0.46 liters of water per kWh of power, achieved through a natural convection cooling system that relies on air circulation without mechanical air conditioning a strong validation of the potential for high-efficiency, eco-friendly cooling solutions.

Building on this highly efficient infrastructure, Syntekabio is also expanding its Internet Data Center(IDC) leasing business. Some clients have already moved in and begun operations, and additional contracts with gaming companies and biotech firms are expected in the second half of the year. With high-performance computing resources becoming critical in the AI era, the company anticipates growing demand for data centers that deliver both performance and eco-friendliness.

Looking ahead, Syntekabio plans to leverage its experience in data center construction and operations to launch a consulting business for green data center design, energy, and cooling optimization. As AI industry growth increasingly comes with calls for responsible infrastructure management, the company sees rising demand for data center designs that balance technology and sustainability.
