The Democratic Party of Korea has urged Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to promptly announce the date for the presidential election following the impeachment of President Yoon. In a written briefing on the 5th, spokesperson No Jong-myeon emphasized, "Prime Minister Han must announce the presidential election date swiftly. At the very latest, it should be disclosed by the upcoming Tuesday, the 8th, when the cabinet meeting is scheduled."
According to the Constitution, a presidential election must be held within 60 days of a presidential vacancy, and under the Public Official Election Act, the acting president is required to announce the election date at least 50 days in advance. This timeline suggests that Acting President Han must set the election date by the 14th. It is expected that the upcoming cabinet meeting on the 8th will likely include the agenda of setting the date for the next presidential election.
The Democratic Party's prominent presidential candidate, Lee Jae-myung, is expected to resign from his position as party leader once the election date is set, in order to prepare for the internal party primary.
Spokesperson No further stated, "Prime Minister Han should sincerely apologize to the nation in the first cabinet meeting after Yoon's impeachment and immediately submit a supplementary budget bill." He criticized, "If the head of the executive branch is impeached for causing national chaos, the first action of the acting authority should be an apology. There is also a need to take responsibility for the prolonged unrest and governmental incompetence leading to the collapse of livelihoods and the economy."
He added, "We will also confirm the position on the missed opportunity for a supplementary budget. The government must create an effective supplementary budget and submit it to the National Assembly. We cannot wait any longer."
Moreover, No demanded, "Prime Minister Han should immediately accept the resignations of the presidential aides. With the impeachment of the main instigator of the rebellion, Yoon, it is only common sense and the demand of the people that his aides should also share the same fate."
These demands reflect the Democratic Party's stance that the transition period following the impeachment should be handled with urgency and responsibility, ensuring that governmental functions continue smoothly and that public trust is restored through decisive actions.
