The highly anticipated tvN drama following Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born is showing promising signs of success right from its first episode, claiming the #1 spot in its time slot across both cable and general programming channels.
The drama in question is none other than tvN's new weekend series Love Your Enemy (directed by Park Jun-hwa, written by Lim Ye-jin, planned by Studio Dragon, and produced by Blitzway Productions), starring Ju Ji-hoon and Jung Yu-mi. The story revolves around Seok Ji-won (played by Ju Ji-hoon) and Yoon Ji-won (played by Jung Yu-mi), who were born on the same day with the same name into families that have been rivals for generations. After 18 years, the two reunite, igniting a war-like romance on the metaphorical "narrow bridge" of love.
The chemistry between Ju Ji-hoon and Jung Yu-mi clicked from the very first episode. The first episode, which aired on the 23rd, recorded an average rating of 4.0% and a peak of 5.2% in the Seoul metropolitan area, claiming the #1 spot in its time slot across cable and general programming channels. (Based on paid platforms combining cable, IPTV, and satellite, according to Nielsen Korea.)
The ratings for the second episode, which aired the previous day, also reflected its growing popularity, achieving an average of 7.1% and a peak of 8.1% in the Seoul metropolitan area, and an average of 6.5% and a peak of 7.2% nationwide. This marked more than double the first episode's ratings of 3.2% (nationwide household average).
In the first episode of Love Your Enemy, the story unfolds as Seok Ji-won and Yoon Ji-won, sworn enemies and first loves from 18 years ago, reunite as the chairman of Dokmok High School and its physical education teacher. The two had been entangled in a destined love-hate relationship since childhood. While their connection was always steeped in animosity, Seok Ji-won unexpectedly felt his heart flutter for Yoon Ji-won for the first time, setting the stage for their complex relationship. Years later, they cross paths again amidst conflicts surrounding the school foundation, hinting at the continuation of their turbulent "enemy romance." Their bittersweet yet comedic story, spanning both past and present, has captured viewers' curiosity.
In the second episode, Ju Ji-hoon and Jung Yu-mi’s characters publicly announced a dating challenge during a school event at Dokmok High. Seok Ji-won confirmed Yoon Ji-won remembered him and confidently approached her, while she held her ground. Their playful banter, mind games, and emotional exchanges showcased their intense love-hate chemistry. Seok Ji-won, reminiscing about their school days, boldly proposed the challenge, which Yoon Ji-won accepted, marking a key turning point in their relationship.
Following the broadcast of episodes 1 and 2 of Love Your Enemy, viewers expressed enthusiastic reactions, flooding comment sections with praise. The comedic performances also drew attention, with comments such as "Ju Ji-hoon is so good at comedic acting," and Jung Yu-mi was hailed as the "queen of romantic comedies." Some fans shared their excitement for the next episodes, stating, "How am I supposed to wait until next week?" and lamenting, "Why is it only 12 episodes?" Many viewers even admitted to rewatching the episodes, emphasizing their eagerness and enjoyment.
Jung Yu-mi, known as a queen of romantic comedies, is returning to the genre for the first time in 10 years since her appearance in the drama Discovery of Love (2014). Ju Ji-hoon is also making a comeback to romance dramas after 18 years, with his last being his debut role in Princess Hours (2006). Their casting drew attention from the start.
At a press conference, Ju Ji-hoon shared, "It’s been a long time since Princess Hours, but that show had fantasy elements. This drama feels more realistic and relatable, like stepping into everyday life at a school, even though my character is the chairman. Filming was a lot of fun." He added, "Our drama may not be big or flashy, but it’s full of relatable, witty moments and heartfelt emotions. It’s something viewers can enjoy easily on a cold winter day."
The production team behind Love Your Enemy boasts an impressive lineup, fueling greater excitement among viewers. The series is helmed by producer Park Jun-hwa, celebrated for directing beloved romantic dramas like Alchemy of Souls and What's Wrong with Secretary Kim. Joining him is screenwriter Lim Ye-jin, known for her work on hits like Love in the Moonlight and The Tale of Nokdu. This powerhouse collaboration has set high expectations for the drama.
Love Your Enemy airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9:20 PM on tvN.
