[한국대학신문 임연서 기자] Twin sisters Nguyễn Minh Anh and Nguyễn Minh Ánh, who are majoring in Arts Management with a focus on Video Content Planning at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, have recently got attention for their dreams of becoming entertainment planners.
Born and raised in Vietnam, Minh Anh and Minh Ánh developed a love for K-POP through the girl group ‘TWICE’ and were inspired to pursue careers in entertainment after participating in the ‘Super Intern’ program, which offers internship opportunities at entertainment companies. They also overcame tough entrance exams and competition to receive admission to a foreign language high school in Hanoi, Vietnam, where they majored in Korean to deepen their understanding of the Korean language and culture.
The twins’ strong passion for their dreams has been evident in their many activities. They have actively participated in various extracurricular programs related to the entertainment industry, with aspirations of becoming A&R entertainment planners. They contributed to the online project ‘HAM KIM CHI,’ and helped facilitate events, such as interpreting and assisting the Busan University delegation during their visit to their school. Through these experiences, they have fostered their dream to become entertainment planners. Additionally, the students have expressed a desire to work for their dream agency, ‘JYP Entertainment.’ As the new semester began in March, Minh Anh and Minh Anh are now embarking on their exciting school life in Korea.
- what has been your experience since your admission?
Minh Anh : Many people have been kind and helpful. The professors take great care of us and provide a lot of advice. Last week, I participated in a meeting for international students where we shared our experiences of life in Korea and I’ve been enjoying my school life.
Minh Ánh : Although I haven’t been here for long, it feels familiar. Since I’m studying something I love, I find the assignments fun. I particularly enjoy the hands-on classes.
- Are there any classes or activities you’re interested in? What would you like to learn?
Minh Anh : I’m interested in the 'Basic Video Production 1’ class. In this class, we can practice video and broadcast production. For example, during the midterm, we create a new video based on the storyline of a famous masterpiece, and for the final exam, we plan and film a talk show. We also learn the basics of using equipment and the video production process. I believe this experience will be very helpful for future A&R-related roles.
Minh Ánh : I’m interested in a dance club called ‘Chuja.’ I intended to apply because I want to make friends and relieve stress through the club. I’m also interested in the ‘Music Business’ course. Since I want to work in the entertainment field, I expect to gain a lot of knowledge about the industry from this course, and I look forward to improving my skills through practical experience.
- Are there any difficulties in taking your classes?
Minh Anh : Sometimes I encounter unfamiliar words and expressions in the classes, but I review my notes when I return to the dorm or ask seniors and classmates for help to study.
Minh Ánh : The language is the most difficult part. Although my Korean is good, there are times when I don’t fully understand, especially in art-related classes. Afterward, I go back to the dorm to review. Fortunately, the professors are considerate of me as a foreign student, so I’m able to take the classes without major difficulties.
- It seems that you are also interested in foreign languages, such as English and Chinese.
Minh Anh : I started learning English when I was around four years old. English is among the the official subjects in Vietnam as well as a very important language for the future. I began learning Korean in my second year of middle school due to my interest in Korean Wave (Hallyu). At first, I asked my parents to help me learn, and the more I studied, the more I became fascinated by the Korean language and culture. I made up my mind to study Korean diligently with the goal of studying abroad. I chose Chinese to complement my Korean studies, as I thought it would be helpful, especially because Chinese characters and vocabulary have many similarities with Korean. I also chose Chinese as my second foreign language in high school because I was often exposed to Chinese content. The foreign language I’m most confident in is Korean, as I have invested the most time and effort in it.
Minh Ánh : My interest in language learning started as a simple hobby. As I studied, I found it exciting to encounter new languages and cultures, and the process itself became enjoyable, so I continued learning. Recently, I’ve developed an interest in Spanish and have been self-studying it. Among the foreign languages I know, I’m more proficient in English and Korean, but I still feel there’s much more to learn, so I continue to study them.
- Are there similarities and differences between the arts in Vietnam and Korea?
Minh Anh : Both countries have rich traditional arts and are rapidly developing modern arts. Nowadays, Korea has a very advanced entertainment industry, with K-POP at the center, making a huge global impact. In Vietnam, artists have been adding new elements in recent years, and there have been improvements in various parts, such as product quality investment and concerts. Recently, Vietnamese products have also integrated traditional culture and artistic elements, getting popular among the younger generation. This blending of traditional and modern art has special significance.
Minh Ánh : Being both Eastern countries, we share similar traditional cultures, such as traditional dance and musical instruments. The difference in the art industries of both countries is that Korea has a highly developed idol group, film, and music industry, which is receiving worldwide attention. Vietnam’s art industry is growing, with a particular focus on solo singers and ballads and pop music.
- What motivates you in your school life or in life in general?
Minh Anh : The driving force behind my school life and life in general is the goal I set for myself. I’ve always dreamed of working in the entertainment industry, and I believe that I’ve come closer to achieving that goal. Because of that, I remind myself not to give up and always do my best.
Minh Ánh : I came to Korea to pursue my dreams, even though I had to live away from my family. It took a lot of courage to do that, but my parents have supported and encouraged me to study hard so I can achieve my goals.
- What are your career aspirations or plans after graduation?
Minh Anh : An entertainment planner is responsible for developing the image and direction of artists, creating album concept ideas, establishing promotional strategies, and planning their media and brand-related activities. Since Korea has a very advanced entertainment industry, I believe it provides the excellent environment for developing creativity and skills. After graduation, I’ve decided to stay in Korea and gain experience in the field.
Minh Ánh : First, I will work hard with the goal of graduating. Afterward, I will carefully check the job requirements of the companies I want to work for and prepare the necessary certifications and skills. I also plan to actively participate in internships programs to gain practical experience and create my own portfolio to effectively showcase my strengths.
- Do you have any advice for foreign students attending colleges in Korea or those wishing to live in Korea?
Minh Anh : Korea has a very rich culture and offers a challenging and exciting learning environment. Studying abroad can be difficult at times, but it will provide valuable experiences and opportunities for growth. One of my professors said that while studying is important, experiences are equally important. He advised me to participate in various activities and gain new experiences whenever I have the time. Finally, keep in mind that your family and friends will always be with you and support you. So, be persistent and keep going towards your dreams.
Minh Ánh : First and foremost, it’s important to clearly define your goals and future plans. Before studying abroad, you should deeply reflect on what you truly want to do and prepare accordingly. If you go abroad without a clear goal, it’s easy to lose direction and get discouraged at times. Also, make sure to thoroughly prepare documents and manage your profile. Once you’ve decided to study abroad, carefully prepare everything you’ll need, as that will be the first step toward a successful experience. Above all, strong mental resilience and a spirit of challenge are essential. Studying abroad is never easy, but if your love for studying abroad and your dreams are big enough, you can succeed anywhere and in anything. Don’t give up—keep challenging yourself!
