SEOUL -- South Korean science fantasy action film "Alienoid: The Return to the Future," directed by Choi Dong-hoon, has topped the box-office on its opening day, getting ahead Walt Disney Animation Studio’s animated musical film "Wish."
The South Korean action film is the second part of "Alienoid," a 2022 movie portraying swordsmen from the Goryeo Dynasty that ruled the Korean Peninsula from 901 to 1392. The swordsmen time-travel to the year 2022 and engaging in battles against aliens with modern-era South Koreans. The movie stars Ryu Joon-yeol, a South Korean actor who gained great popularity in a hit drama "Reply 1988."
Data released by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) showed that the film attracted 94,448 moviegoers on January 10. Disney’s Wish took the second spot with some 35,000 and "12:12 The Day," a historical film directed by Kim Sung-su, secured the third position with about 24,000.
Previously, director Choi Dong-hoon achieved the milestone of surpassing 12 million viewers with two movies -- 2015 action thriller film "Assassination" and "The Thief," a 2012 action comedy film. Normally, a film with more than 10 million viewers is considered successful in South Korea with a population of around 51 million.
