LAS VEGAS -- South Korean startup StyleBot, incubated through a venture nurturing program operated by global tech giant Samsung Electronics, has showcased an artificial intelligence-based virtual closet at the Consumer Electronics Show, the world's biggest annual electronics exhibition held in Las Vegas. The virtual closet offers optimized suggestions for clothes based on users' preferences.

Samsung's C-Lab is an in-house venture incubating project that was established in 2012 to help Samsung employees develop their innovative ideas. When an idea or product seems viable, the developed idea will go through processes of actualization, demonstration, and commercialization. Since the startup incubator program was kicked-off, about 150 Samsung employees have applied and some 40 startups were created.

Galaxy Upcycle, a smartphone app solution that turns old Samsung Galaxy smartphones into internet of things (IoT) sensors, was a project launched by C-Lab and was adopted by its parent company. The app solution helps Samsung phone users to protect the earth by not throwing their old phones away and making them useful at home and workplaces.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being widely adopted by many industries, especially in the retail sector where AI can monitor customers' actions, analyze preferences, and suggest products based on data. AI-based product suggestion systems are mainly utilized by ecommerce companies such as American ecommerce giant Amazon, Coupang, South Korea's Amazon counterpart, and Aliexpress, the business-to-customer (B2C) wing of China's ecommerce giant Alibaba Group.

StyleBot introduced its AI-based fashion suggestion solution at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that started on January 9 and ends on January 12 (local time). The startup showcased its technology through a smart mirror, a tall mirror with a display function that can overlay images, video, and other information on the mirror's surface. The AI-based solution uses photographs uploaded by users to analyze and make fashion suggestions.

"We think that our service in the only generative AI service that studies users' preferences based on clothing which are already owned by users and offer style suggestions," StyleBot CEO Kim So-hyun told Aju Business Daily during an interview at CES 2024 on January 10. Kim added that many of other similar services are mainly focused on attracting users to buy new clothes.

Along with StyleBot, about a dozen of other C-Lab incubated startups participated in the booth operated by Samsung's venture incubation program. Other startups showcased technologies related to hair loss prevention, urine-analysis smart healthcare, and three-dimensional design sectors. .
