[News Culture] The most memorable encounter at this year’s Seoul Art Week may happen without a ticket—or even a museum entrance. A visitor could simply look down and discover a work by British artist Ryan Gander disguised as a coin.
That element of chance captures the ambition behind the 2026 edition, which runs Aug. 31 through Sept. 6. Seoul Art Week is positioning the city itself as the venue, linking major museums and commercial galleries with artist residencies, independent spaces and the industrial alleys of Euljiro.
A total of 141 venues will present 159 exhibitions and programs, expanding the international attention surrounding Kiaf SEOUL and Frieze Seoul at COEX into neighborhoods across the capital.
The program has grown well beyond its early concentration around the convention district. This year, visitors are being encouraged to leave the fair booths, travel between districts and encounter art within the everyday fabric of Seoul.
That shift becomes visible on opening night. Euljiro, a neighborhood where experimental art spaces have emerged among printing shops, workshops and aging industrial buildings, will host the festival’s first “Opening Night” on Aug. 31.
Twenty visual arts venues in the area will remain open late for exhibitions, performances and artist talks. Rather than beginning with a formal museum ceremony, Seoul Art Week will open within one of the city’s most distinctive independent art communities.
News Museum will serve as the evening’s main hub. A 10-artist group exhibition will explore moments of pause within everyday life, while Lee Hyun-tae will stage a performance using a web-based audiovisual instrument.
A special Euljiro art map will guide visitors to nearby galleries, project spaces and independent bookstores. A dedicated shuttle will also connect participating venues, making the opening night less a single event than a moving tour through the neighborhood.
The citywide program arrives alongside a particularly strong museum calendar.
The Seoul Museum of Art’s Seosomun Main Branch is presenting “Yoo Youngkuk: A Mountain Within Me,” a major retrospective devoted to the Korean abstraction pioneer. At the Seoul Museum of Photography, “Martin Parr: We Are Martin Parr” surveys more than five decades of work by the celebrated British photographer in his first large-scale Asian retrospective.
Leeum Museum of Art is showing “Into Other Spaces: Synesthetic Environments by Women Artists 1956–1976,” while Sehwa Museum of Art is staging a retrospective of German painter and sculptor Georg Baselitz.
Together, the exhibitions give Seoul Art Week an institutional backbone. Yet the festival’s identity depends just as heavily on the smaller spaces operating outside the city’s best-known cultural addresses.
Gander’s “The Find” provides the clearest expression of that approach. The public art project will release 16,000 coin-like works across participating Euljiro venues, COEX, the Seoul Baekje Museum, the Seoul Museum of Craft Art and other cultural sites.
Anyone who finds one may keep it. The work turns discovery into ownership and places contemporary art in the path of people who may not have planned to see it at all.
The project also challenges the familiar model of viewing art inside a designated exhibition room. Here, the encounter may occur in a corridor, beside a cultural venue or while moving through the city. The finder becomes both audience and collector through an unplanned moment of attention.
Artist residency programs will offer a different kind of access. Visitors can enter creative spaces including Seoul Art Space Geumcheon and Sindang Creative Arcade to observe works in progress and speak directly with artists.
These encounters shift the focus away from finished objects and toward the labor behind them. Studios, conversations and unfinished ideas become part of the public program, allowing visitors to see how art takes shape before it reaches a gallery wall.
Seoul Art Week is ultimately designed around movement. Its success will depend not only on attendance at major exhibitions, but on whether visitors venture into unfamiliar streets and connect venues that would otherwise remain separate.
Public museums, private galleries and artist-run spaces are being presented as parts of the same cultural landscape. Euljiro’s alternative venues sit alongside blue-chip art fairs and established institutions, turning the week into a broader portrait of how art is produced, exhibited and encountered in Seoul.
The official website and location-based Smart Seoul Map will help visitors navigate the dispersed program. Check-in events and other activities will add an interactive layer to the experience.
The art fairs may bring the international market to COEX, but Seoul Art Week is making the case that the city’s creative character cannot be contained inside a convention hall. It lives in museums and galleries, but also in old industrial buildings, working studios, independent bookstores—and perhaps in a small object waiting to be found on the street.
