An exhibition exploring records from the Korean War and the lives of ordinary people who endured its devastation will open this week, offering visitors a deeply personal perspective on one of the nation's most traumatic chapters.

Jointly organized by the Gyeongsangnam-do Archives, Changnyeong Museum, and Bakjin War Memorial Hall, The War of Budong: Records and Lives will run from June 2 through August 2 at the special exhibition gallery of Changnyeong Museum. The exhibition revisits the final moments of individuals lost in the chaos of war and restores their names and stories through surviving records.

One of the exhibition's most significant features is the first public display of original wartime death notices preserved by the Gyeongsangnam-do Archives. These official documents were issued by the government to inform families of a soldier's death in combat. The exhibition interprets them not simply as administrative paperwork, but as fragments of history that preserve the final chapter of a life and the painful reality faced by those left behind.

Alongside the notices, visitors will encounter casualty lists, government documents, U.S. Information Service news records, wartime artifacts, photographs, and testimony materials that collectively reconstruct the atmosphere of the era.

Changnyeong occupies a particularly important place in Korean War history. Located along the Nakdong River Defense Line, the region witnessed some of the war's fiercest fighting, including the Battle of the Bakjin Area. The strategic importance of the region dramatically altered the lives of local residents, placing entire communities at the center of a brutal conflict.

Rather than presenting a simple chronological account of military events, the exhibition focuses on the experiences of soldiers, families, and civilians who lived through the war. Through archival materials and historical objects, it reconstructs everyday life during a period of extraordinary hardship and uncertainty, offering a more intimate understanding of the human consequences of conflict.

The War of Budong: Records and Lives brings renewed attention to the individuals whose stories survive within historical documents. By revisiting wartime death notices and related records, the exhibition encourages contemporary audiences to reflect on the memory of war and the enduring value of peace.

The exhibition also highlights how historical records can preserve human experiences long after the events themselves have passed. The names, documents, and personal histories on display transform abstract wartime statistics into individual lives, reminding visitors that every record once belonged to a real person with family, hopes, and a future interrupted by war.

Following its presentation at Changnyeong Museum, the exhibition will travel to Bakjin War Memorial Hall as part of a continuing touring program.
