The Theater Yong at the National Museum of Korea was filled with vibrant energy that instantly warmed the cold November air. As the first beat announcing the opening echoed, the atmosphere in the auditorium was charged with anticipation and curiosity, and the audience waited for the birth of a new genre to unfold before their eyes. Where the vitality of K-POP, the warmth of a family musical, and symbolic moments of Korean history converge on one stage, the K-pop musical 'Joseon Wizard Jinjun' took its impressive first step beyond expectations.
On the 13th, 'Joseon Wizard Jinjun', hosted and produced by the National Museum Foundation of Korea in collaboration with HJ Family & Kids Co., Ltd., received an enthusiastic response from audiences right from its opening. As a new form of family performance that brings to life the compelling combination of 'K-POP x Korean History', 'Joseon Wizard Jinjun' is capturing the attention of family audiences this winter by seamlessly combining fantasy, adventure, and educational value.
The story begins when the brother YouTubers and K-POP duo 'Jin' and 'Jun', boasting one million subscribers, receive a mysterious DM and are suddenly summoned to the Office of Wizard Officials in Joseon. Traveling through a time-space where reality and fantasy coexist, the brothers embark on a journey to battle the secret organization 'Heukwhadan', which attempts to obstruct King Sejong the Great's creation of Hangeul. With K-POP-based music and thrilling storytelling that naturally captivates teenagers, children, and adults alike, the show creates a powerful cross-generational appeal.
The dynamic use of the museum space further distinguishes this production. Through pre and post performance exhibition experiences, audiences naturally encounter significant events and figures in Korean history, gaining a special opportunity to learn about the present and imagine the future through the onstage narratives of King Sejong the Great and Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Rather than simply watching history, the musical offers an immersive Adventure Museum experience that allows audiences to grow through an adventurous time traveling journey connecting past, present, and future.
With a total of 16 actors, the production boasts a blockbuster scale stage. The direction, incorporating K-POP performances, Taekwondo breaking, and audience interactions, breaks down the boundaries between the stage and the auditorium, maximizing immersion. The audience feels as if they have jumped into the scene with the brothers Jin and Jun to help prevent a crisis in Joseon.
Audience reactions since the opening have been enthusiastic. Reviews such as "A fantasy historical musical where you can fully master King Sejong the Great and Yi Sun-sin", "A hip fusion of tradition and modernity", and "Watching the show and touring the museum felt like killing two birds with one stone" continue to prove its popularity.
Drawing major attention from its very first performance, 'Joseon Wizard Jinjun' is expected to establish itself as the signature family musical of this winter. The production runs until December 31 at Theater Yong in the National Museum of Korea.
